The Psychology of the Anti-Hero
Diving into the world of anti-heroes - flawed, complex characters who blur the line between right and wrong. From Breaking Bad and Logan to Thunderbolts and Your Friends & Neighbors, these stories explore power, morality, and redemption, reminding us that imperfection often makes the most compelling heroes.

Growing up, we were taught to root for the righteous hero - the brave, noble figure who saves the day and does what’s right, no matter the cost. But what happens when the protagonist isn’t a paragon of virtue? What if they lie, cheat, and bend morality to their will… and we still somehow want them to win?
Enter the anti-hero…
An anti-hero is a central character who lacks the traditional heroic traits we usually expect. They're typically not selfless or morally upright. Instead, they often act out of self-interest, guided more by survival, revenge, or personal codes of honor than by any sense of conventional justice. And yet, we’re often fascinated by them - maybe even more than we are by the classic hero. Perhaps it’s because the perfect hero feels so out of reach and unrelatable to the average person.
So what makes an anti-hero so compelling?
Here are a few defining traits:
- Flawed and morally ambiguous - They’re not perfect, and that makes them feel real.
- Rebellious by nature - They challenge authority, norms, and the status quo.
- Charismatic or cunning - Their charm and intelligence often earn our loyalty.
- Still the central figure - They may be complex or even destructive, but the story revolves around them.
Often, the anti-hero’s worst traits are shown early, then as the story unfolds, we learn more about their current struggle and challenging past. This makes their character three-dimensional, and it subtly encourages us to look beyond their faults because we have a deeper understanding of their motivations. Think: Walter White from Breaking Bad, who transforms from mild-mannered teacher to criminal mastermind. Or Tony Montana in Scarface, who claws his way to power with raw ambition and brutality. Thomas Shelby (Peaky Blinders) commands loyalty with his sharp mind and colder heart, while the most recent Marvel movie centers around anti-heroes.
What all these characters share is not just their flaws - it’s their depth. They challenge us to look past surface morality and explore what drives human behavior, power, and survival. We don’t admire them despite their darkness - we admire them because it reflects something uncomfortably true about the world and ourselves. So maybe it’s not surprising that anti-heroes have become some of the most enduring and magnetic figures in modern storytelling.
Here are some film and TV show recommendations based on anti-heroes:

🏘️ Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV+)
A sharp, darkly comedic drama that follows a group of seemingly ordinary friends whose personal relationships unravel beneath the surface. As tensions rise, the show explores themes of infidelity, emotional manipulation, and the quiet cruelty of modern intimacy. Unflinching and provocative, it holds a mirror to the selfishness and complexity that often hide behind everyday interactions.
🦸🏼♂️ Thunderbolts* (in cinemas)
Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts* features a team of antiheroes, starring Florence Pugh playing Yelena Belova (the protagonist), who is originally tasked with a high-stakes mission under the direction of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. Departing from typical superhero tropes, the film explores themes of trauma, redemption, and the psychological burdens of its characters. With a focus on emotional depth over spectacle, it offers a fresh take on the genre.
👨🏻🔬 Breaking Bad (Netflix)
Created by Vince Gilligan, this critically acclaimed series chronicles the transformation of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, into "Heisenberg," a notorious methamphetamine producer. Partnering with former student Jesse Pinkman, Walter descends into the criminal underworld, leading to profound consequences for himself and those around him.
🦸🏻♂️ Logan (Disney+)
Set in a dystopian 2029, Logan presents an aging Wolverine caring for an ailing Professor X while hiding near the Mexican border. Their lives are upended when they encounter Laura, a young mutant with powers akin to Logan's, pursued by dark forces. The film offers a gritty, emotional narrative that serves as a poignant conclusion to Wolverine's saga.
